Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.

Music education is an integral part of our program at The Saul and Carole Zabar Nursery School. Children have music class two to three times weekly. Our large group classes (one classroom of children) are designed so that children may build upon music skills throughout their time here at the JCC. Classes consist of both activities and experiences focused on learning musical concepts through aural, visual and kinesthetic learning. We also have time for smaller groups to go more deeply into the areas of music in which they are particularly interested. It is during this time that we explore instruments in depth, and children are encouraged to explore sound as music in all realms of the classroom and beyond. Those journeys often take us to unexpected places for further study-storytelling, play-writing, even “listening walks” around the JCC and on our city streets. A large part of our school culture includes singing. We sing both new and old songs, and we learn a lot of Hebrew songs as well as Jewish holiday songs. Each week, we gather by age group for a ruach-filled (spirit) Shabbat sing-along, where we tell stories and learn what it feels like to celebrate as a community.
