Joanie Kaltseis is a head teacher in Classroom 2 and has been at the Saul and Carole Zabar Nursery School since 2007. She has a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood and early childhood special education from New York University and a master’s degree as a reading specialist from Teachers College at Columbia University. Before coming to the JCC, Joanie taught at schools around Manhattan and on Long Island, where she grew up. She now lives on the Upper West Side with her husband and their three children, who are all proud members of the vibrant community here at the JCC.
Joanie feels privileged to work at the nursery school, where the school's philosophy encourages teachers to value students' abilities, interests, and contributions. She says, “Advocating for children with special needs is a passion of mine, as is creating an inclusive classroom environment that meets every child at his or her own level and encourages them to grow and learn together. Children are my biggest inspiration. I love seeing the world through their eyes; their unique perspective illuminates the positive and often humorous aspects of everyday life. I begin each day with my class knowing a new adventure awaits!”
